SLIDING OFF GOOD
Proverbs 14:14
The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways, and a good man shall be satisfied from himself. AKJV
According to 1Corinthians 13:1-13, love is not firstly the good things we do but the condition of our heart. You might be doing good things, sacrificing your whole life while your heart is evil darkened with cloven intentions. That of course, clearly is no love! Therefore the rewarding good work that God Himself really loves is works done from a love-conditioned heart.
Now, backsliding means withdrawing from being good or doing good. If you step down from doing good, probably you think you're too good and need move with others who aren't good-ward people and you become mean, an average person, lukewarm and a fence-sitter, friend, you're backsliden. And God, our God, the ever good Lord is ready to kill you! Maybe not physically.
God abhors backsliders, those who shy away from doing good, who become average with the evil doers of the world. God usually set His heart against such mean people to bring their lives to a halt.
The parable told in book of St. Luke 12:16-21 is story of a rich man that became bigger after some investments. Though prosperous he seemed, yet sorrowfully backsliden. He had turned back from doing good, was rather thinking of increasing himself. In his own words he said, "I will pull down my barns and build greater and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thine ease, eat, drink and be merry."
Bro, are you increased physically but deceased spiritually? Sis, are you falling off the good racks that you're now mean, average, a mediocre? Friend, are you now pursuing goods, increasing your Self life, making provisions for your flesh? Are you now at ease in this toilsome troublesome world, relaxed with evil doers, shuffling alongside gospelers?
You that once partook of the holy Ghost, seen the goodness of God, tasted the sweet word of God, have you now bid farewell to all this goodness, fallen off this ladder, yet prosperous? Are richer in flesh but poorer in God? That rich man died that same night he stopped thinking good. He died because he backslided.
