AKJV Another way to reading today's verse is to say, Whoso devotes himself to money shall be destroyed. This is because of what Luke 16:13 writes, " No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon" . The reason anyone would despise the word of God, maybe not to read or careful to observe what's therein is his love and devotion to money.
